  Right on the sea situated between the "Cinque Terre" and the Gulf of La Spezia, the ancient medieval village of Portovenere, celebrated by poets, gives the tourists a fantastic stay on the seaside in all seasons with its clear sea full of fish, its little narrow streets, its gardens, its islands Palmaria and Tino that you can reach by boat, its typical ligurian dishes, its shops and feasts. Important fortress of the Genoese Marine Republic, Porto Venere has a long story of corsairs and sailors, of sieges and local traditions going back to ancient Rome which has imbued its castle, its walls, its churches and its little narrow streets.Portovenere was conquered by the Genoese in the 12th century, who built the village walls and planned the fortified borough. The village is composed of an array of tower houses known as “fortress houses” coloured in yellow, pink and grey aligned on the seafront, and the walls, which surround the village, connecting it to the impressive Castle made of escarpment walls.
